A court in Kerala has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for brutally raping and physically assaulting a 19-year-old COVID-19 patient belonging to the Dalit community. The incident occurred in 2020 while the woman was being transported to a treatment center. The accused, Noufal, was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2,12,000. The court found him guilty after a trial that involved examining 55 witnesses, reviewing 83 documents, and inspecting 12 material exhibits. The investigation was led by R Binu, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in Adoor at the time.

A court in Goa has sentenced a 31-year-old local resident to rigorous life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Irish-British national Danielle McLaughin in 2017. The accused, Vikat Bhagat, was found guilty of raping and murdering the 28-year-old tourist, whose body was found in a forested area in Canacona village of South Goa on March 14, 2017. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for the rape and murder and Rs 10,000 for the destruction of evidence.

The incident comes just months after a similar case involving techie Atul Subhash in Bengaluru, who also ended his life alleging harassment by his estranged wife and her family. Yadav's family alleged that his in-laws pressured him to transfer his property to his wife's name and threatened him when he refused. Police are investigating the case.
